Kim Winter, the hands (and brain!) behind Flextiles, never went to art college. Instead, after studying biochemistry at University College London she became a journalist, working for the British Medical Journal and the British Council before ending up at Consumers' Association.
For 15 years she worked for their travel magazine Holiday Which?, editing an annual hotel guide and inspecting destinations around the world. Then she was promoted to become Managing Editor of Which? magazine, editing far more glamorous reports on toasters, TVs and tax!
In 2009 she decided to go freelance and after studying at Morley College she developed an interest in textiles, particularly in wet felting and indigo and other natural dyes, where her scientific background came in handy! Her work is inspired by the natural world, and she often incorporates found objects in her pieces. She has also studied with specialist felters and dyers who are leaders in the field, including Lisa Klakulak, Andrea Graham, Liz Clay, Maria Friese and Irit Dulman.
Kim's hatred of waste and interest in sustainability led her to start upcycling, creating one-off pieces by buying items from charity shops and overdyeing or overprinting them or using them in her felt making.
Kim is a member of South London Women Artists and the International Feltmakers Association. She is also a director of Makerhood, a co-operative of artists and designer-makers based in Lambeth, south London.
